Glossary

Even though we do try to avoid using technical terminology across our websites, there maybe times when you may need further help to understand some of the features described on our cars. That's what this glossary is for. Search alphabetically.

 

Floor mats

- Removeable mats made of carpet to protect the inside of your car from dirt. Easy to clean.
 

Floor net

- Helps to secure smaller items in the rear compartment area and prevent them from moving around.
 

Fog lamps

- Designed to provide enhanced forward light in foggy or low-visibility weather conditions.
 

Fog lamps – front projection

- Front fog lamps provide a wide, bar-shaped beam of light and are generally aimed and mounted low. They are intended for use at low speed to increase the illumination directed towards the road surface and verges in conditions of poor visibility due to rain, fog, dust or snow. Rear fog lamps are red and are designed to make cars as visible as possible to other drivers from the rear.
 

Follow me home head lamps

- Headlights stay on for up to approx. 3 minutes after leaving the parked vehicle.
 

Frame, aluminium

- In order to cut weight, the chassis is made of aluminum which is a light-weight metal.
 

Front wheel drive (FWD)

- A car that is "pulled" or driven by its front wheels rather than being "pushed" by its rear ones as in rear wheel drive. In this configuration, the engine is located over the driving wheels which means better traction in snow.
 

Fuel consumption – combined

- A combined measurement of fuel consumption, calculated according to a pre-defined formula,of urban and extra-urban driving, expressed in litres per 100 kilometres or miles/gallon (UK, US).
 

Fuel consumption – extra-urban

- The amount of fuel used while driving out of town, expressed in litres per 100 kilometres or miles per gallon (UK, US).
 

Fuel consumption – urban

- The amount of fuel used while driving in an urban environment, expressed in litres per 100 kilometres or miles per gallon (UK, US).
 

Fuel gauge

- An instrument to display the amount of fuel left in the tank. A warning light which glows switches on when fuel is getting low.
 

Fuel tank capacity

- Measured in litres, this is the maximum capacity of the fuel tank.
